Planning family photos should be fun—not overwhelming. One of the most common questions I get as a family photographer in Fort Worth is:
“What should we wear for our family photos?”
The good news? Coordinating family outfits doesn’t mean everyone matching in white shirts and jeans. With a few simple guidelines, you can create a polished, timeless look that photographs beautifully and feels authentic to your family.
Let’s break it down step-by-step 👇
1. Start With a Color Palette (Not Matching Outfits)
Instead of matching, coordinate. Choose 3–5 colors that complement each other.
✨ My favorite timeless palettes:
- Neutrals (cream, tan, soft gray)
- Earth tones (rust, sage, olive, brown)
- Soft pastels (dusty blue, blush, lavender)
- Classic black + neutrals for a more modern look
Choose one “anchor” outfit (usually mom’s) and build everyone else’s outfits around it.
📸 Pro tip: Earthy and neutral tones photograph beautifully in natural light and never go out of style.
2. Mix Textures, Not Loud Patterns
Texture adds depth without distracting from faces.
✔️ Great texture options:
- Knits
- Linen
- Denim
- Chiffon
- Corduroy
- Lace details
🚫 Try to avoid:
- Loud prints
- Logos
- Tiny stripes or busy patterns (they can photograph oddly!)
If you want patterns, keep them subtle and limit them to one person.
3. Dress for the Location & Season
Where your session takes place matters just as much as what you wear.
🌾 Outdoor / Field Sessions
Soft neutrals, flowy dresses, linen, and earth tones
🏙 Urban / Downtown Sessions
Structured outfits, darker neutrals, denim, modern silhouettes
🍂 Fall Sessions
Rust, mustard, olive, cream, layered looks
🌸 Spring Sessions
Light fabrics, pastel tones, airy movement
I always help my clients choose outfits based on the session location we book so everything flows naturally.
4. Coordinate Shoes & Accessories
Shoes matter more than you think—especially in full-body shots.
👟 Best options:
- Neutral boots
- Sandals
- Simple flats
- Clean sneakers (for lifestyle sessions)
💍 Accessories:
- Hats, hair bows, or jewelry are great—just don’t overdo it.
- Less is more when it comes to accessories in photos.
5. Keep Kids Comfortable (Happy Kids = Better Photos)
If kids are uncomfortable, it will show in photos. Make sure:
- Clothes fit well
- Fabrics are soft
- Shoes are broken in
Bring backup outfits if needed—especially for little ones.
As a family photographer (and teacher 😉), I know kids—movement, laughter, and comfort are key!
